Rock Box
December 8, 9 and 10
Located in the middle of the Andes mountain range, just 1 hour from the city of Los Andes, it is a mountainous caisson that includes a series of mountains of more than 4,000 meters, the main one being the Gloria hill of 4,479 meters, when going through it you can see multiple waterfalls with imposing mountains in the background, lagoons and guanacos. Its low technical difficulty makes it ideal for getting into mountain photography.
Day 1
We will meet at the Los Andes bus terminal, from there a 1-hour trip awaits us to reach the beginning of the trail in Cajón del Peñón, from there at 1,890 meters high we will begin to walk the first section of 4.4 km that will take us to the Cascadas del Peñón, a set of 3 waterfalls of more than 30 meters and 2,550 meters high, where we will make the first stop to photograph.
Next, we will continue climbing 2.5 km more, on the way to where we will set up our first camp at 2,940 meters high, during this journey we will be able to observe the Gloria hill (4,479 m.) in front of us and our backs the Becker hill and Alto de la Posada (4,448 meters and 4,260 meters respectively). In this section we will already begin to feel the height, so we will go quietly to save energy for sunset, at which time we will experience scenes like the following.
Day 2
We will get up early to watch the sunrise and try some pictures. Then, we will dismantle the camp to continue climbing 3 km more towards the high camp at 3,720 meters high, it is a short section that we will do quite calmly, so we can photograph the flora and fauna of the place in complete tranquility, in this section it is common to observe guanacos, and also diversity of birds. We will look for a place to camp, rest and then prepare for sunset, the camp will be located just 300 meters from the viewpoints and 1 km from the summit of Alto del Peñón.
Day 3
We will contemplate the sunrise from the heights and then we will begin the descent. As in the whole route, we will go down quietly, always maintaining the best conditions for photography.
(Possibility of adding a 4th day to the experience, to maximize photographic possibilities and reduce difficulty physical)
