Summit of the Vizcachas
26 and 27 November 2022

cerro las vizcachas de olmue

Belonging to the coastal mountain range and located in the community of Olmué, Las Vizcachas hill (2,046 meters) offers beautiful views during its ascent. As you gain height you can see El Roble and La Campana hills, also part of the Cordillera del Melón to the north and a great panoramic view of the Andes Mountains, from Mercedario and Aconcagua hills to the north and San José and Maipo volcanoes to the north. the south, almost 300 kilometers of mountain range from its viewpoints. From the summit we will also have the possibility of spotting different species of flora and fauna unique to these heights, such as condors, vizcachas, lizards and different birds distributed among the wild vegetation that makes its way between the rocks.

Our itinerary will allow you to take pictures in complete calm, with enough time at each stage, especially from the summit. There will be time to hang out, rest, feed and explore the possibilities that the viewpoints offer.

Day 1

The meeting point for those who move on foot will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Limache subway station, where we will be waiting for them with transportation to go to Quebrada Alvarado. For those who arrive by vehicle, we will meet at 10:30 a.m. in the Quebrada Alvarado square., where we have our private parking nearby. Once we are all together we will have breakfast and then we will leave for the Vizcachas to begin our tour.

The trail begins with a moderate slope that is maintained almost all the way to the summit. We will pass through some rest areas from where we will be able to observe La Campana and El Roble hills in an increasingly clean way as we gain altitude. The distance that we will travel on the first day will be 2.3 km in approximately 3 to 4 hours, counting breaks and stops to take pictures (estimated time reaching the summit at 15:00 hrs).

Our porter service will arrive at the summit with all the camping equipment, food and water for the rest of the day and the next. At the summit we will have time to explore the photographic possibilities before sunset, which will be at 8:33 p.m. La Campana and El Roble will probably get all the attention, but also towards the Andes mountain range we will have a wide range of possibilities. During the night there will be no moon, so we will have much more starry skies for those who want to try astrophotography.

Day 2

We will get up early to watch the sunrise and try some pictures, this time with the rays of the sun that will come from the Andes mountain range (sunrise will be at 6:29 am). Then we will disarm the camp to go down to the Olla del Vizcachas sector, where a slope is born that a little further on will take us to the Salto del Agua, a 15-meter waterfall located at 1,590 meters high. It will be a quiet descent, with time to observe and photograph the flora and fauna of the place. After going to the waterfall, we will return to a little height to connect with the trail that will take us down the El Almendral ravine, where the tour ends (distance walked on the day 9.5 km). In this place our transportation will be waiting for us to take us to Quebrada Alvarado around 6:30 p.m. There they will be waiting for us with an eleven-dinner to end the experience around 8:00 p.m. At that moment the transport will leave to take to the Limache station those who will require.
